– Aquesta Bank kicked off an inaugural blood drive with the American Red Cross on Thursday, March 8 in an effort to save lives of those in need in the Lake Norman community. The Red Cross BloodMobile was on site at Aquesta’s temporary headquarters in Magnolia Plaza Shopping Center from 10:00 AM – 2:30 PM Thursday with nurses on staff to meet with volunteers willing to donate.
“The blood letting began at 10:00am” joked Aquesta Bank CEO Jim Engel and “We had a steady stream (no pun intended) of donors all day,” said Engel. “Even when the Blood Mobile closed its doors at 2:30, they had to reopen them for additional volunteers who saw the sign and wanted to stop in to participate.”
29 volunteers donated their blood during the day with 13 of those being first time blood donors. The process took 4-5 minutes per participant, and was painless for the majority of participants. “Over 28 pints of blood were collected on Thursday at the bank,” said Red Cross representative Laurie Niepoth. “That equates to over 78 lives in our community that Aquesta bank helped to save.”
Blood donors were given free Chick-fil-A coupons, Aquesta Bank T-shirts, and refreshments, but those items offered at the bank didn’t equate to the satisfaction donors received from knowing they helped to save a life.
“We were very pleased with the turn-out,” said Engel, “and we will continue to support the American Red Cross in any way we can.” Aquesta Bank hopes to make the blood drive an annual event. “We’re a small bank, making a very big difference in the community,” said Engel.
